CBD Payment Processing for Hemp-Derived CBD Brands

Payment Nerds provides CBD payment processing for hemp-derived CBD brands that sell online, in stores, and on repeat orders, through acquiring banks that review and approve the category. If Square, Stripe, or Shopify Payments will not act as a payment processor for CBD products like yours, we set up card, ACH, and digital wallet acceptance on a CBD merchant account built for the way you sell. Approval and available features depend on your products and the acquiring bank’s review.

CBD Payment Processing Solutions for Hemp Brands

A CBD payment processor has to do two jobs: get your account approved by a bank that accepts hemp-derived CBD, and keep it running once the orders start coming in. We match your products and sales channels with an acquiring bank that supports the category, then configure the gateway, fraud settings, and billing tools around them.

Online Card & Wallet Acceptance

Accept Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and Discover on your ecommerce store with hemp credit card processing approved for your product line, plus Apple Pay and Google Pay where your checkout supports them. Address and security-code checks (AVS and CVV) and optional 3-D Secure help screen card-not-present orders before they turn into disputes.

The gateway connects your store to the merchant account. We set up supported gateways such as Authorize.Net and NMI, which store card data as tokens instead of card numbers, so saved cards, refunds, and partial captures work from the tools you already use. Our CBD payment gateway page covers Shopify and WooCommerce setups.

Tinctures, gummies, and topicals sell well on repeat. Recurring billing with account updater and retry schedules keeps refills going when cards expire, and clear consent wording and a recognizable billing descriptor cut down on “I don’t recognize this charge” disputes.

Countertop terminals and mobile readers for CBD shops, farmers markets, and trade shows, a virtual terminal for phone orders, and ACH or invoice payment links for stores and distributors that buy wholesale.

Which Payment Processors
Allow CBD in 2026?

Few mainstream platforms are still payment processors that allow CBD, so hemp brands usually need a high-risk merchant account from a provider that works with banks approving the category. Here is where the big names stand as of October 2026.

ProcessorAllows CBD?Current policyWhat it means for CBD brands
SquareNoSquare is winding down its CBD program. Its August 2026 email told sellers to remove CBD, hemp, and hemp-derived items, online and in person, by October 15, 2026.Square runs payments, hardware, and software as one system, so CBD sales need a new processor and often a new CBD POS system.
StripeRestrictedCBD with only negligible THC, per local limits, is a restricted business that needs Stripe’s review. CBD products with THC above the local legal limit, including CBD edibles, are prohibited.Whether a CBD brand can stay depends on what it sells, and the review can change.
Shopify PaymentsNoShopify says Shopify Payments does not support hemp, CBD, or THC products and points sellers to third-party providers.Shopify stores keep their store and add a CBD payment gateway from a provider that approves hemp.
PayPalNot addressedPayPal’s US acceptable use policy does not mention CBD. It prohibits transactions involving narcotics and certain controlled substances. There is no published approval path for CBD sellers to build on.
High-risk specialistsYes, case by caseEach brand is underwritten on its own merchant account with an acquiring bank that approves hemp-derived CBD.Approval depends on your products and lab results, and the account is not shared with other merchants.

The mainstream platforms work well for low-risk retail, but they pool many merchants under one account and can close a category with a single email. That is why the best CBD payment processor for most brands is a specialist that reviews your actual products. Payment Nerds handles CBD payment processing this way, and our pricing is published on our pricing page. Our roundup of the best CBD merchant accounts compares the specialists in more detail.

How the 2026 Hemp Law Affects CBD Payment Processing

In November 2025, Congress redefined hemp in Public Law 119-37. The new definition measures total THC, including THCA, at no more than 0.3% on a dry-weight basis. Final hemp-derived products can contain no more than 0.4 milligrams per container of total THC combined with other cannabinoids that have similar effects, and a container is the innermost package that touches the product, such as a bottle, jar, or packet.

  • November 12, 2026: Products containing cannabinoids that cannot be naturally produced by the cannabis plant lose hemp status.
  • December 11, 2026: The rest of the new definition takes effect, including the total-THC test, the 0.4 mg per-container limit, and the exclusion of naturally occurring cannabinoids that were synthesized or manufactured outside the plant. Public Law 119-103, signed September 2, 2026, moved these from November 12.

For hemp payment processing, the change shows up in underwriting. Expect banks to ask for current lab results (certificates of analysis) showing that each product meets the new limits, and to stop approving products that no longer qualify as hemp. We review your product list against the new definition before you apply, so problems surface before they reach your account. Congress could change these dates again, so check the current law before you plan inventory.

Tools That Keep CBD Payments Running

One Account for Every Sales Channel

Online orders, counter sales, phone orders keyed into a virtual terminal, and wholesale ACH payments all settle to one CBD merchant account, so deposits, refunds, and fees show up in one set of reports.

Chargeback & Fraud Tools for CBD Orders

AVS, CVV, velocity limits, and dispute alerts catch card testing and confused buyers early. When a chargeback does come in (the bank reversing a sale after a cardholder dispute), organized receipts, tracking, and policy pages make the response easier, and our guide to reducing CBD chargebacks covers the rest.

Clear Pricing & Free Statement Review

Many payment processors for CBD quote one headline rate and leave the rest for your statement. Our rates are published by risk tier with no setup or monthly fees from Payment Nerds, and a free review of your current statement shows what credit card processing for CBD costs you today.

CBD Payment Integrations for Shopify, WooCommerce & More

Most CBD brands keep the store and tools they already run and change only the payment processor for CBD orders behind them. Available integrations depend on your software, gateway, and account setup.

  • Shopify: Shopify Payments does not support CBD, so Shopify stores connect through a compatible third-party gateway. We confirm which options work with your theme and apps before you switch.
  • WooCommerce, BigCommerce, and Magento: Connect through Authorize.Net or NMI so orders, refunds, and saved cards stay in your cart.
  • Subscription Apps: Review supported connections for your refill or subscription box software, including account updater and retry settings.
  • POS and Terminals: Countertop terminals, mobile readers, and a CBD POS system for shops, markets, and events.
  • Wallets: Apple Pay and Google Pay where your platform and gateway support them.
  • Age Verification: Third-party age and ID verification tools for products and states where your policies require them.
  • Accounting: Settlement and fee data for QuickBooks, Xero, or NetSuite, by app, connector, or export.

CBD Payment Processing FAQs

What is CBD payment processing?

CBD payment processing is the card, ACH, and digital wallet acceptance a business uses to sell hemp-derived CBD products. Because banks treat CBD as high risk, it usually runs on a dedicated high-risk merchant account and a gateway approved for the category rather than on an all-in-one platform.

High-risk merchant account providers such as Payment Nerds work with acquiring banks that approve hemp-derived CBD. Stripe restricts the category, Shopify Payments does not support it, and Square told sellers to remove CBD and hemp items by October 15, 2026, as it winds down its CBD program.

PayPal’s US acceptable use policy does not mention CBD by name, so there is no published approval path for CBD sellers. If PayPal is part of your checkout today, keep a dedicated CBD merchant account as the main way you take cards.

Cost depends on your risk tier, average order, card mix, and sales channels. Our rates by tier are published on the pricing page with no setup or monthly fees from Payment Nerds. Partner banks may add network fees, and new high-risk accounts can carry a reserve, which we disclose before you sign.

Expect business formation documents, owner ID, bank statements, recent processing statements, your website, and refund policy. CBD applicants also need lab documentation, usually a certificate of analysis for each product, and your representative will confirm the full list. Our CBD merchant account guide walks through approval.

It can. Most of the new federal hemp rules start December 11, 2026, including a total-THC standard and a 0.4 mg per-container cap. Products with cannabinoids that cannot be naturally produced by the cannabis plant lose hemp status earlier, on November 12, 2026. Expect banks to check that each product qualifies, so keep current lab results on file.

No. Payment Nerds does not support marijuana or THC sales, including dispensaries. Hemp-derived CBD businesses are reviewed separately, and products must meet the current federal hemp definition and the acquiring bank’s rules.
